Huh, something good about Edward Longshanks. I’m something of a partisan toward Scottish history and the Hammer of the Scots does not look good.

Well, Edward was actually a pretty good king… for England. For Scotland and Whales he was a brutal conqueror, but for England itself he ended internal strife, improved infrastructure, and updated the law.

The notable thing about the code of Hammurabi is not so much that it was version 0.0 of The Law, and unsurprisingly, had defects, but that it was Written In Stone.

Before that, there was no such thing as a crime that could get you punished even if you were Dominque Strass-Kahn or William Kennedy Smith or a bunch of friends on a bus in India.

Things, of course, changed once we had written laws.
